SMASA - Self Medication Association South Africa
The Self-Medication Manufacturers Association of South Africa (SMASA) was formed in mid 1999.Nicola Brink is the Chairperson of SMASA and Allison Vienings is the Executive Director of the Association.
The objectives of the Association are inter alia to play a role in the promotion and support of legislative matters, to interact with government, provincial administration, local authorities, other associations and statutory councils.
The Association will promote and protect the interests of the Association, encourage co-operation between members of the Association and will deal with matters that may affect the common interests of members.
The Association confers with the Government, Provincial Administrations and local authorities and their Departments, as well as other interested bodies, collects and disseminates information likely to be of use to members and encourages and assists in the settlement of disputes by enquiry, conciliation, arbitration and/or any other method prescribed under the Industrial Conciliation Act.
The Association has a Technical Committee (looking at technical matters, including circulars from the Medicines Control Council, policy matters such as registration and legislation) and a committee responsible for policy, legislation and guidelines on advertising and promotion of products.
SMASA is also a member of the World Self Medication Industry (WSMI). We have regular meetings and discussions with the Pharmaceutical Manufacturer’s Association, National Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, the Medicines Control Council and various other role-players. SMASA has been an active member of the Inter Industry Task Group formed, particularly to negotiate with the MCC and Department of Health on matters pertaining to communication with the MCC and addressing the back log.
Employers engaged in the Self-Medication Manufacturing Industry within the RSA are eligible for membership of the Association.
