China Bio Partnering Forum
From 2009-06-23 to 2009-06-24
Bringing China biotech to the world
ChinaBio® LLC and EBD Group will host their first ChinaBio® Partnering Forum in Shanghai to meet the needs of biotech and pharma companies as well as developers of early stage technology looking for funding and strategic partnerships. This event will bring together over 400 attendees from all over the world for two days of intense partnering.
China has remained one of the few bright spots during the global financial crisis with GDP growth still at nine percent. While VC investment in biotech and life science companies has slowed somewhat, big pharma and biotech are demonstrating a healthy appetite for funding novel, early stage technologies. Pfizer, Roche, Merck and others have established licensing and partnering offices in Shanghai specifically to seek these opportunities.
Partnering is becoming a significant source of funding for technology development and early and mid-stage companies in China.
The number of partnering deals with China life science companies, universities, and institutes increased 37 percent in 2008 and the number of M&A deals doubled. And the value of these deals can be significant – from USD 1 million to over USD 1 billion.
If you are a business development executive with a pharma or biotech company, China has a robust pipeline of novel drug candidates in development.
Over 1,800 novel molecules have been patented in China, 84 are in clinical trials, and 27 new drugs have launched in the last five years, many of which are novel biologics. This means that there are novel molecules at all stages of development in China, and Chinese companies are anxious to partner with Western companies for development and distribution of these valuable assets.
There are also over 300 CROs in China offering high-quality services supporting drug discovery and development projects of major pharma and biotech companies worldwide. Many of these are willing to work on a risk sharing or collaborative basis with their sponsors.
