Drug exports increase by 27%, CAEMe

The drug exports exceeded the $ s 161 million in the first three months of this year, representing an increase of 27% over the same period last year, according to official figures.



The registered exporting pace until March 2009 is higher than the previous year and shows a continued trend for the remainder of the year, according to estimates of the chambers representing the exporting pharmaceutical companies: CAEMe, Cilfa and Cooperala .



Drug imports, meanwhile, grew of 15.7% during the same period, while the increase in 2008 over the previous year was 21.5%, meaning that this reduction improved the trade balance of the industry.



The sector registered a record in 2008, when the industry's exports reached U.S. $ s 628 million.



Buyers:



Regional markets were the main destinations, with highlights on places like Brazil (u $ s 107 million), Venezuela ($ s 63 million), Uruguay (u $ s 60 million), Canada (u $ s 58 million), Colombia ( u $ s 39 billion), Chile (u $ s 33 billion) and Mexico (u $ s 29 billion).



Together, these seven leading markets accounted for 62% of total exports.



However, in recent years the pharmaceutical industry in Argentina has managed to enter new positions outside the region, diversifying the destination of their exports. These new markets include Lebanon (u $ s 9 million), Thailand (u $ s 8 million), China (u $ s 7 million), Latvia (u $ s 6 million) and Russia (u $ s 5 million ).
