Government-mandated appointment system rolls out at 50 Beijing hospitals, GBI

Release Date: 2009-09-01

Fifty tier-three hospitals in Beijing posted their contact information on www.bjhb.gov.cn, Beijing Health Bureau's public information website, in order to begin the hospital appointment policy starting from September 1, according to Beijing Youth Daily.

The Beijing Health Bureau announced August 5 that all tier-three hospitals in Beijing should encourage patients to make hospital visit appointments ahead of time in order to ease crowding due to large numbers of walk-in patients, and that patients must register for appointments using their real names to prevent place-holding middlemen.

According to the report, some hospitals have found other ways to address over-crowding issues; for example, Xuan Wu Hospital will no longer offer specialist service registration for many expert fields. Patients will have to register for outpatient services first, and only register for an appointment with experts through referral if the disease requires specialist attention. Also, Fuxin Hospital will implement a system in which patients should first seek treatment at community hospitals before being referred to the hospital.
