Founded in 2001, PICASSO focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to improve care and quality of life for patients.
The mission of Partners in Care Solutions for COPD (PICASSO) is to optimize COPD care by bringing together all relevant stakeholders. Founded in 2001, PICASSO focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to improve care and quality of life for patients.
Prof. Dr. Onno van Schayck, a founder and scientific director of The School for Public Health and Primary Care (CAPHRI) in Maastricht, Netherlands tells: “In 2001 COPD treatment for patients was stagnant. The syndrome focused on a negative image of patients and caretakers because of the nihilism that ‘it is the patient’s own fault because they smoke’. PICASSO helped changed this perspective by bringing together all stakeholders and supporting scientific research to find solutions and provide a new approach for COPD care.
PICASSO initiates activities in four areas to achieve its goal:
• Quantifying and measure quality of care. Care is optimized by measuring outcomes and the burden of disease for COPD patients. PICASSO contributes by defining the most important outcome parameters.
• Supporting scientific research by collecting proofs of intervention that optimize care.
• Supporting local innovations in intervention and implementing them in daily practice.
• Increasing COPD awareness.
To date PICASSO has completed 12 scientific studies in COPD and has supported 11 daily practices in care optimization. PICASSO has become a respected partner in the Dutch healthcare landscape with closely established partnerships with renowned organizations such as The Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development.
Since 2004 PICASSO has supported 15 projects that optimize care for COPD patients. According to Boehringer Ingelheim, COPD treatment over the past six years has increasingly moved towards identification, self management, spirometry, and undoing recurring bottlenecks associated with smoking prevention. A major testament to PICASSO’s success has been helping local caretakers recognize and circumvent bottlenecks in the care process – the starting point for discussion with caretakers that ultimately garner support for local initiatives.
But the best proof is seeing that we really can make a difference for the COPD patient by helping in care optimization!
PICASSO for COPD is an initiative of Boehringer Ingelheim, Pfizer and CAPHRI, The School for Public Health and Primary Care which started in 2001.
