Johnson & Johnson Educational Center for High-Tech Medical Technologies in Kazan

Educational Center for High-Tech Medical Technologies non-profit partnership in Kazan offers a unique example of state-private partnership in the spheres of education and health care. The project, which is unprecedented in Russia, was launched in September 2007 upon the initiative of the Ministry of Healthcare and Social Development with the support of the Republic of Tatarstan and Johnson&Johnson in the framework of the national Health project. Johnson&Johnson investment comprises US$15 million in five years.
The main aim of the center is to train personnel for high-tech medical aid along the following guidelines: endoscopic surgery, heart surgery, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, reproductive technologies, etc. The project aims at setting new medical education standards in compliance with the best foreign experience and at increasing the access of the population to high-tech medical help.
Key innovations of the Center are computerized simulators which fully reconstruct a true surgery real time, as well as training surgery rooms equipped up-to-date. Mastering skills on simulators and in training surgery rooms help doctors and paramedical staff radically decrease the number of fatal errors during surgical interventions.
The fully-equipped Center opened the doors for students in a short time. President Dmitry Medvedev attended the commencement ceremony on February 21, 2008.
Center operations in 2008-2010 confirmed its efficiency and high demand for intensive and innovative training methods. During the period the Center held 73 scientific events which were attended by over 10,500 people. Over a thousand of medical personnel from 40 Russian regions trained according to the unique programs of the center with the use of high-tech equipment and reconstructed real clinical conditions. In two years the center offered 92 courses in such disciplines, as vascular diseases, endosurgery and gynecology, artroscopy, ophthalmosurgery, as well as courses for nurses and health care managers.
Today the center is successfully cooperating with leading medical establishments and re-training desks, including the Moscow State Medical and Stomatological University, the Russian Post-Graduate Academy, the Russian State Medical University, and the Kazan State Medical Academy. The center employs over 70 best professionals in various fields. Polls revealed education in the center favorable influenced endoscopic surgery training as all doctors who trained in the center and lecture surgery at various retraining medical desks and faculties have adjusted their educational programs and increased the share of practical studies with the use of the Kazan center methodology.
From the very beginning the center enjoyed the highest praise from visiting state officials. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, former Tatar President Mintimer Shaimiyev, Director of the social development and environmental protection department of the Russian government staff Nelly Naigovzina, first deputy chairwoman of the United Russia Party faction in the State Duma Tatyana Yakovleva, as well as academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences highly assessed the work of the center, its equipment, educational programs, as well as development prospects.
