ST.PETERSBURG AND BIOPHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY ASTRAZENECA INTEND TO COLLABORATE IN R&D, AstraZeneca Russia

Biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and St.Petersburg signed an Agreement on contemplations today. The ceremonial signing was held within St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. This agreement implies collaboration and information exchange in the field of biomedicine and particularly sets the ground for the company’s and St.Petersburg’s cooperation to involve local scientific research and educational organizations to new AstraZeneca’s Predictive Science Centre in the region.Yesterday, June 16, 2011 AstraZeneca announced its intention to establish an R&D Predictive Science Centre in St. Petersburg within the coming year. According to the agreement the parties signed today they are going to establish a joint expert group on the basis of the new R&D center to cooperate in the sphere of computer biomedicine development. This collaboration will encourage the involvement of St.Petersburg scientific research and educational organizations and provide opportunities for information exchange.
St.Petersburg is one of the largest and dynamically developing innovative centres of Russia. Concentration of educational and scientific research institutes, the scope of scientific talents and the amount of clinical trials conducted there demonstrate the unique potential for R&D and pharmaceutical industry development. Moreover St.Petersburg is one of the leading regions to implement projects in pharmaceutics as it has the favorable investment climate and pharmaceutical cluster establishment experience.

New R&D center establishment is a part of AstraZeneca’s commitment to Russia’s economy and healthcare development, which will total in $1.2 bln investment over the next 5 years. This was announced by David Brennan, CEO of AstraZeneca, at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
