BPOM
The National Agency of Drug and Food Control, known as the BPOM, is tasked with the main functions of legislation, regulation and standardization of policies and procedures regarding food and drug products in Indonesia. This involves licensing and certification of pharmaceutical industries based on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), pre-market evaluation of products, and post-market evaluation of products. Market monitoring involves product sampling, laboratory testing, inspection of production and distribution facilities, investigation and coordination with law enforcement. The agency also evaluates product advertisements and promotions to verify that product claims are within established guidelines. The BPOM is responsible for public communication and education regarding product safety and public warnings in the event that inferior products reach the marketplace. Finally, the agency is also responsible for tracking and cracking down on drug counterfeiters, in coordination with law enforcement. The BPOM has been working with other ASEAN governments to harmonize standards across the region.
