The head of Biogen-Idec, the Boston-based biotech group subject to intensifying takeover speculation, has denied that his company is in talks with another pharmaceutical company or that he needs any such deal.

Shortly before rumours of a bid sparked a fresh rise in the share price, James Mullen, chief executive of Biogen, told the FT earlier this week that he did not need access to capital or a strategic partner.
