Pharmaceutical Executive to publish Focus Reports special spotlighting Poland

Release Date: 2010-11-30

Warsaw, Poland. 30 November 2010 -- Focus Reports, the contract-publishing unit of Focus Communication, is currently preparing a special feature on the Polish Pharmaceutical Industry, to appear early n2011 in Pharmaceutical Executive, the pharma industry’s leading trade journal. The special Poland issue follows similar successful reports that Focus Reports has prepared in Europe, such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.

In anticipation of the report’s publication early next year, select interviews will be regularly posted on pharma.focusreports.net

With a significant population nearing 40 million inhabitants, the Polish pharmaceutical sector is today Europe’s 6th largest market and one that boasts one of the highest generic penetrations. In addition to being a key manufacturing centre producing at the highest production standards, Poland is also increasingly becoming an export platform in the region. It thus comes as no surprise that the generics sector - a mature, high-volume but relatively low-value market, dominated by well established world class local players - will continue to play a crucial and significant role in the Polish pharma picture. Nevertheless, despite these strong market dynamics and a large overall market size, the Polish generics industry still has some challenges to overcome, such as the lengthy reimbursement approvals for generic medicines compared to other EU countries, or the lack of resources of most domestic producers to fund research into new molecules, and therefore, refraining research into innovation drugs. Furthermore, with the rise of India, China and other CEE countries, Poland must ensure it remains a competitive generic medicines market with transparent information about prices, efficient healthcare financing and an adapted reimbursement scheme.

Focus Reports’ Poland special will spotlight the following issues: What are the main trends defining the pharma industry and generics market in Poland? What strategies will CEOs and presidents of companies implement to tackle these challenges? What authorities have in mind to shape a new “pharma deal”, reform the healthcare scheme, and ensure Poland remains an attractive investment destination? All these are questions that will be raised during this report and to which we will try and answer through the views of the country’s decision makers.

Key Polish pharma personalities from government & business, likely to figure in the report, include: Ewa Kopacz, Minister of Health, Waldemar Pawlak, Minister of Economy, Barbara Kudrycka, Minister of Science and Higher Education, Jacek Rostowsk, Minister of Finance, Grzegorz Cessak Director of the URPL, Zufia Ulz as the Main Pharmaceutical Inspector, Janusz Obukowicz from the Pharmaceutical Research Institute (PRI) ; Paweł Sztwiertnia Director General of the Employer’s Union of Innovative Pharmaceutical Companies (INFARMA), Cezary Sledziewski from the Polish Association of Pharma Industry Employers (PZPPF), Danuta Grater from Stowarzyszenie Menedżerów Opieki Zdrowotnej (STOMOZ); Jacek Glinka of Polpharma, Maciej Adamkiewicz of Adamed, Slawomir Ziegert of Bioton, Tomasz Nemeth of Gedeon Richter, Medana Pharma Terpol Group, Biofarm, Curtis Healthcare, Jerzy Toczyski of GSK, Peter Koetsier of Bristol-Myers Squibb, Patrick Van Ginneken of Pfizer, Jacek Barlinski of Nycomed, Sanofi-Aventis, Novartis, MSD, Merck, Eli Lilly, amongst many others.
